The Design Method of Contraflow Left-turn Lane at Signalized Intersection
As a traffic management measure to improve the traffic capacity of intersections,contraflow left-turn lane has been continuously applied.In order to maximize the effectiveness of contraflow left-turn lane,the applicable conditions of contraflow left-turn lane and the four stages of vehicles in the process of contraflow left-turn are summarized,the method of designing the scheme of contraflow left-turn by determining the pre-signal phase and the length of contraflow left-turn lane is proposed.Firstly,the impact of lane length changes on the implementation of contraflow left-turn lane is analyzed based on the number of vehicles turning left on borrowed lanes per unit time as the evaluation criteria.Secondly,the calculation method of the optimal length of contraflow left-turn lane and an appropriate left turn pre signal phase scheme are got,by summarizing the mathematical relationships between different parameters.Finally,the design method is proved to be effective by using VISSIM simulation model to verify.
