Advances in Current Research of Fungi in Genus Didymella
Didymella fungi can cause a variety of plant diseases, leading to yield losses of crops.Plant disease symptoms induced by pathogens of this genus usually manifest as lesions on leaves and stems to generate visible pycnidia.Taxonomically, the genus Didymella is closely related to Phoma. As a polyphyletic group,it also contains some unidentified species, which are needed for further exploration by taxonomists. This article reviews the current research progress on the establishment of genus Didymella, the development of its taxonomy and phylogeny and the methods of rapid detection as well as the comprehensive prevention and control of diseases caused by Didymella. Moreover,a phylogenetic tree is also constructed at the molecular level with 84 species reported so far from the Didymella for understanding of their evolutionary relationships, which thereafter should provide a useful basis not only for future systematic studies on the diversity of Didymella but also for scientific considerations as well as design of particle approaches to the current research issues.
