A Discussion on the Method for Estimating the Settlement of Single-layer Homogeneous Soil Foundations Using Plate Loading Tests
The plate loading test, conducted in-situ,is one of the most reliable methods to evaluate the bearing capacity and settlement charac-teristics of soil foundations. However, due to the limited size of the loading plate, the test has a relatively shallow influence depth. When the building foundation is large in size, the stress influence range encompasses multiple soil layers.Sole reliance on the plate loading test may not fully reflect the actual settlement of the building foundation. This paper aims to explore the limitations and improvement methods of foundation settlement calculation methods in traditional soil mechanics.By analyzing curve derived from indoor confined compression tests and comparing it with the actual settlement process observed in on-site plate loading tests, the disparities between the two are identified.Furthermore, the ap-plicability of estimating the settlement of single-layer homogeneous soil foundations through plate loading tests is discussed.
