Paradoxical expression is a unique linguistic processing and rhetorical strategy.It juxtaposes semantically oppo-site or mismatched linguistic elements to represent the complexity of things,principles,or cognition,thereby achieving un-expected expressive effects.By examining internet slang from the past two decades,those generated by paradoxical expres-sion are analyzed and categorized into three structural and semantic types:schema suppression,unconventional modification relationships,and oppositional contrast.Further discussion reveals that paradoxical internet slang is cognitively grounded in"semantic paradox"and popularized due to people's cognitive renewal in speculative thinking,emotional expression,cultur-al demands,and the pragmatic need of the internet for novelty and uniqueness.It has become a noteworthy category of inter-net slang with high generative potential.
