An Indispensable Experience:A Study on the Interaction Between the University of Chicago and the City of Chicago in the 19th Century
The early development of the University of Chicago played an indispensable role in establishing its status as a prestigious university. From its foundation in the 1850s,theuniversity was initially conscious of interacting with the city, continuously getting close to the needs of the city. However, due to deviation of the actual school running, the interaction between the city and the university was challenging, leading the university to bankruptcy. In the 1890s,the newly re-estab-lished University of Chicago endeavored to reconcile differences, achieving a mutually beneficial development where the u-niversity thrived because of the city, and the city prospered because of the university.Leveraging its expertise, the Universi-ty of Chicago increasingly gained recognition from the city of Chicago, winning the city's favor with"good ideas",educating its citizens with"new knowledge",and addressing urban issues with"true science".
