Content and Potential Risk of Thorium and Uranium in Surface Soils of Nanchang Urban Area
The radioactive element pollution has attracted significant attention in recent years. As the economic and population center of Jiangxi province,it is of great significance to determine the levels and risk characteristics of radioactive elements(e.g.,Th,U)in Nanchang. This paper focuses on the surface soils of Nanchang's urban area, capitalizing on inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS)to measure the content of radioactive nuclides Th and U.The potential risks were analyzed based on single factor pollution index method and geological accumulation index method. The results show that the content of Th ranges from 2.58 to 21.1 mg/kg,with a mean value of 14.7 mg/kg,slightly higher than the background value of Chinese soil but lower than the background value of Jiangxi province. The content of Th ranges from 0.5 to 5.4 mg/kg,with a mean value of 2.9 mg/kg,significantly lower than the background values of Jiangxi province. The potential risk of Th and U in Nanchang is low and there is no radioactive pollution in Nanchang as a whole. However, some areas in Qingyunpu district and Honggutan district may experience Th and U enrichment caused by human activities, requiring strengthened monitoring and management in these areas.
