A Variant-feature-based Modeling System for Mechanical Parts
In order to solve the transfer and transit of data in CAD/CAPP/CAM and improve the efficiency and quality of design, we present the conception of feature variation and analyzed the geometry variation, attribute variation, feature creation and structure character. We also discussed the data structure of variant features and its definition in detail and the principle of feature-based modeling system. Finally an example was given. Using variant-feature-based modeling system, the problems of features with complex process planning such as T-slot, dovetail-groove and pocket were solved successfully. CAPP can obtain these features' process and fixture planning automatically. All of these validate that the variant feature has wider and stronger adaptability than parametric feature.
