Anatomical Structure and Ecological Significance of Ovary in Rhododendron decorum
The ovary anatomical structure of Rhododendron decorum Franch and its changes during the fruit development were ob-served by using conventional paraffin section method, and its ecological significance was also analyzed. The results indicated that the pistil of R. decorum was compound pistil and had open-type of style with wet stigma. The ovary was of axile placentation with a large number of ovules. The ovules were developed obviously 30 days after pollination. The septum was developed from the ovary wall 60 days after pollination. The septum was formed and the seed wing was developed 90 days after pollination. The seed wing was formed and the hilum was developed 150 days after pollination. The ovary wall of R.decorum was thick and hard, which provided a good protection for the seed development, and was a performance of plant adaptivity to the environment. Meanwhile, the huge number of seeds also en-sured the source of species reproduction in the nature.
