"Aesthetic Concepts"and Aesthetic Supervenience:A Study on Aesthetic Features in the View of Analytical Aesthetics
The concept of"aesthetic concepts"was put forward by Frank Sibley,a representative figure in contemporary Anglo-American analytic aesthetics, and has significantly influenced the field of aesthet-ics and many topics in analytical aesthetics have been related to this idea since the 1950s.Sibley argued that"aesthetic concepts"do not have sufficient or necessary conditions for their establishment, making them unconditionally dependent. In aesthetic judgment, aesthetic features are derived from the interpre-tation of non-aesthetic features and are thus determined by these non-aesthetic features,a notion re-ferred to as aesthetic supervenience.Sibley's ideas have evoked considerable interest within the analyt-ic aesthetics community.Other aestheticians such as Beardsley and Walton, have acknowledged Sibley's basic assertions and further elaborated and refined the concept of aesthetic supervenience.Together, their viewpoints have advanced understanding about aesthetic features and aesthetic activities in con-temporary aesthetics.
