Practice and Thinking of Subject Indexing of Chinese Documents Geographical Element
Improving the quality of bibliographic data and standardizing the subject indexing of literature are the funda-mental steps of information organization and resource construction of Chinese literature.In the practice of cat-aloging,the indexing of Chinese literature's geographical topics is out of order.But the rigorous and system-atic disciplinary system of geography provides a relatively broad perspective for accurately revealing and deeply indexing geographical elements.Based on the analysis and judgmentof the subject vocabulary and the summary of lots of subject indexing work experience,this paper clarifies the four indexing principles of objectivity,specificity,conciseness,and practicality in geographic indexing,the basic steps of structured geographic indexing,and conventional practices for standardized geographic indexing.Finally,it puts for-ward some measures to improve indexing work from optimizing the indexing system and cataloging tools,im-proving the logical system of geographic classification topics,and enhancing the management effectiveness of indexing work.
