This paper analyzes the portrayal of Xu Zhimo in three Asian American literary works:Bound Feet and Western Dress,Pearl of China, and East Goes West. Each author presents Xu Zhimo from different perspectives:as a talented but indifferent intellectual struggling between tradition and modernity,a romantic poet deeply attracted to educated women, and a romantic idealist with a passion for saving his country.Bound Feet and Western Dress approaches Xu Zhimo's character from a familial narrative, acknowledging Xu's talent and ambition while revealing his selfishness, apathy, and irresponsibility in his romantic relationships.Pearl of China fictionalizes the love affair between Xu Zhimo and Pearl S.Buck, highlighting Xu Zhimo's respect and admiration for educated women.East Goes West adopts a patriarchal position and highlights Xu's romantic and patriotic ideals,as well as his charm and emotional depth. The image of Xu Zhimo portrayed in these three novels can enrich the representation of Chinese characters in foreign literature and deconstruct the traditional stereotypical portrayals of Chinese men in white American literature. These novels help foreign readers gain a deeper understanding of Chinese literature and culture through the multifaceted image of Xu Zhimo.
