Safety and Toxicological Evaluation of Propolis Mints
Objective:To evaluate the safety and health risk of propolis mints. Methods:Acute oral toxicity test, genotoxicity test(including bacterial reverse mutation test, mammalian erythrocyte micronucleus test and mouse spermatogonia chromosome aberration test)and 28-day oral toxicity test were performed on propolis mints. Results:The acute oral toxicity test showed that no symptoms of poisoning or death were observed in the mice after administration. The median lethal dose(LD50)of propolis mints was>10 g/kg BW,indicating that propolis mints were non-toxic.The results of genotoxicity tests were not positive, indicating that propolis mints are not genotoxic. The 28-day oral toxicity test showed that the rats in each group grew well and had no signs of poisoning during the test. There were no adverse effects on body weight, weight gain, food intake and food utilization rate of rats.Histopathological examination was performed in the main organs of the rats in the high-dose group and the control group, and no histopathological changes were observed in the examined organs related to the test substance, and no harmful effects were observed at the dose of 10 g/kg BW.Conclusion:No toxic effect of propolis mints was observed at the doses and conditions studied in this study.
