How have Teaching Methods in Primary and Secondary Schools Changed Since the Implementation of New Curriculum Reform
Over the past two decades of basic education curriculum reform in China, classroom teaching methods have undergone changes in three major categories:traditional lecture-based teaching,self-directed cooperative inquiry learning, and practical pedagogy.Based on a sample survey of 3,534 primary and secondary school teachers from 13 provinces, this study found that the main teaching methods used by teachers are traditional lecture-based teaching and new experimental and experiential inquiry methods. Most teachers believe that new teaching methods are complementary to traditional ones.Teachers generally reject the exclusive use of traditional lecture-based teaching and affirm experimental inquiry and situational experience inquiry methods.Practical pedagogy is still in the exploration stage.Urban teachers and primary school teachers use traditional lecture-based teaching less frequently, while teachers in eastern regions use traditional lecture-based teaching more often and use inquiry and practical pedagogy less frequently.Participating in training is an effective way for teachers to learn and master new teaching methods, and special training on teaching methods has a positive effect on teachers'pedagogical transformation. On this basis, the reform of basic education classroom teaching methods in China needs to clearly establish a teaching method system with Chinese characteristics at the national policy level, encourage and guarantee teachers to try and explore practical pedagogy at the school level, and actively explore and master new teaching methods with a quality-oriented approach at the individual level.
