The Development Trend and Evolution Characteristics of Humanities and Social Sciences in World-class Universities of Science and Engineering from the Perspective of Organizational Change:Take ETH Zurich as an Example
With the approaching of post-industrial society and accelerating social era,the humanities and social sciences are facing a serious crisis of legitimacy within the universities of science and engineering. With the background of the logic of discipline development shifting from knowledge-driven to organizational change-driven,based on the perspective of organizational change, this paper reveals the development trend and evolution characteristics of humanities and social sciences in world-class universities of science and engineering taking ETH Zurich as the research object. The results show that the development of the humanities and social sciences at ETH Zurich has gone through four stages:"discipline dependence"under the logic of the state,"discipline independence"under the logic of the market,"discipline diversification"under the logic of the university management and"discipline integration"under the logic of academics. The discipline organization of humanities and social sciences exhibits four evolutionary characteristics:the goal has changed from"attachment"to"integration, the structure from"rigid"to"matrix",the function from"single teaching"to"integration of teaching, scientific research and social service"and the cultural loyalty from"absence"to"return".In the context of the construction of"new liberal arts",the development of humanities and social sciences in China's first-class universities of science and engineering should be driven from focusing on the external logic of the state and market to the internal logic of university management and academics.Especially,it is necessary to focus on the top-level planning of discipline development, strengthen the cross-disciplinary integration, and highlight the supportive role of discipline development to the function of talent training.
