Structural Changes in University Major Preferences under Macroeconomic Fluctuations
Affected by the global economic weakness and stagnation,China's economic downward pressure has significantly increased, leading to supply-demand and structural imbalances in the labor market. In the field of university major selection, macroeconomic fluctuations have a profound impact on students'behavioral decisions and their preferences for majors.Against this backdrop, this paper establishes a comprehensive analytical framework that includes the attributes of professional disciplines and career paths.Based on the national enrollment database of"Double First-Class"universities from 2017 to 2021,this paper empirically examines the structural changes in university major preferences under macroeconomic fluctuations. The study found that in the context of economic pessimism and labor market instability, students'preferences for majors with institutional affinity have significantly increased.Conversely, for majors with market affinity and diverse employment paths, due to the lack of stable career expectations and institutional safeguards, students'preferences have shown a significant downward trend.
