The Introduction of Herbart's Concept of Discipline in the Late Qing Dynasty and Its Enlightenment to Contemporary Education
The primary objective of Herbart's discipline is to foster students'moral autonomy and independence, enabling them to possess genuine moral volition, overcome the negative influence of external factors, exercise freedom in decision-making,and consistently adhere to it,akin to moral self-discipline.During the late Qing China, assessment methods and standards for student behavior were borrowed from Herbart's discipline approaches;however, due to the influence of the traditional Chinese teacher's way and its current politics, the relevant regulations were exceedingly detailed and stringent.Nevertheless,Jiangsu Normal School prioritizes the cultivation of student self-governance.From a contemporary perspective on character development among students, moral volition serves as the bedrock for their ethical construction while practical communication stands as a pivotal means for nurturing students'character.Furthermore, one should not underestimate the significance of local educational experiences in the reform.
