Experimental and Numerical Analysis on the Fatigue Performance of Bolted Steel Beams with Corrugated Webs
Fatigue tests on two bolted steel beam specimens with corrugated webs were carried out,and the fatigue performance and failure modes of the specimens were obtained. The stress distributions on the beam cross-section,and the stress and stiffness variations under cyclic loading of the specimens were analyzed.Existing fatigue test results of welded steel beams with corrugated webs were summarized, and the fatigue life differences between welded and bolted steel beams were compared.By using the finite element software ABAQUS,numerical models of the bolted steel beam specimens with corrugated webs were developed, and the model accuracy was verified by comparing with previously obtained fatigue test results.Based on the validated numerical models, the stress distributions around the fatigue failure position were studied. The stress concentration at the bolt hole was the main reason for the initiation of fatigue crack and subsequent fatigue failure.Based on the obtained numerical results, the fatigue life of the steel beams was further studied using the FE-Safe software, and the predicted fatigue life and position of fatigue failure agreed well with the fatigue test results.
