Experiment and Calculation Method of Occlusive Bolt Connections in Shear Between Thin Steel Sheets
In order to explore the occlusive bolt connections in shear between thin steel sheets,a total of 12 occlusive bolt connection specimens and ordinary bolted connection specimens with different washer shapes and pretension forces were designed, and shear tests on the specimens were carried out until failure. The experimental results show that the thin steel sheets of the occlusive bolt connections displayed tension failure adjacent to the occlusive location, while the thin steel sheets of the ordinary bolted connections exhibited bearing failure close to the bolt hole.It was evident that the shear capacities of the occlusive bolt connections were significantly higher than those of the ordinary bolted connections.Finite element models of both occlusive and ordinary bolted connections were developed, and the accuracy of these models was validated against the obtained shear test results. The influences of the washer diameter, the bolt diameter, the sheet thickness and the occlusive depth on the shear capacity of the occlusive bolt connections were further examined. Finally, the shear mechanism of the occlusive bolt connections was studied, and a calculation formula with accurate predictions of shear capacity was proposed.
