Practices and Implications of the Operation Model of the IGERT Program for Training Engineering PhDs in the United States
The training of engineering doctoral students in China faces many problems today. With the help of the US IGERT doctoral training program,an in-depth analysis was conducted about the background of the program, the practice process, and the process of how the program iterates to adapt to the dynamic environment from three stages:planning, implementation, and evaluation. In terms of project planning, the IGERT program was supported and funded through a highly consistent thrust with the US Natural Science Foundation;in terms of project implementation,a complete review-evaluation-selection mechanism was set up before, during and after the program, and a pentagonal training model for doctoral students was introduced;and in terms of program evaluation, the program was evaluated through the"intellectual value"and"broad societal value"criteria, and the"intellectual value"and"broad societal value"criteria. In terms of program evaluation, performance assessment is conducted mainly through the two indicators of"intellectual value"and"broad impact with social value".On this basis, the IGERT project provides insights for China from four aspects.
