Development of seismic evaluation standards of existing buildings in the United States was briefly reviewed. The basic ideas, frameworks and main contents of the United States'seismic evaluation standards of existing buildings were introduced based on ASCE/SEI 41-17.As a complete performance based seismic evaluation standard, building performance objective shall be firstly determined while conducting the seismic evaluation based on ASCE/SEI 41-17,which consists of structural performance level and nonstructural performance level. The evaluation process consists of the following three tiers,Tier 1 screening procedure,Tier 2 deficiency-based evaluation procedure, and Tier 3 systematic evaluation procedure.Comparison was made with the Buildings seismic appraisal standard(GB 50023-2009),and related discussions were conducted. The standards of the two countries have many similarities in the concept of seismic evaluation, but there are large differences in specific methods. The United States'standard directly conducts seismic evaluation under moderate earthquake and rare earthquake, while the Chinese standard adopts a comprehensive appraisal method which combines capacity checking under frequent earthquake with the evaluation of seismic measures. In addition, the United States'standard also has a simplified method of seismic evaluation using the benchmark buildings, which is worth learning from Chinese standard.
