In a reconstruct project of an existing building, the owner proposed to remove some of the central pillars to expand the usage space of its top floor. To this end,the designers used removing columns by supporting beams method, using the remained structural components as supports, erected supporting beams to lift the beams which were supported by the columns to be removed, and then removed them. Moreover, the stress state of the retained structural components was maintained as much as possible in the scheme, and then greatly reduced the amount of demolition, reinforcement, and other impacts on the normal use of other parts of the building during the process. Some necessary analysis were also employed to calculate the internal forces and deformations of the key components during the construction phase, and then took targeted measures to eliminate related secondary internal forces. Therefore, the safety, reliability, and rationality of the house were ensured during its subsequent lifespan, and good results had been achieved.
