Graft copolymer purified from the emulsion is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction.Mechanical properties of cement mortars modified graft copolymer are tested and the micro-morphology is observed by SEM.Under water reduction efficiency of 25%,using sodium lignosulfonate as dispersing agents and the tributyl phosphate as defoamer,1.5% doping content of CMC-g-PSS/PMMA can effectively improve the mechanical properties of cement mortars. As modified cement mortars cured for 7 and 28 days, flexural strength improvement of 7.99% and 8.26%,compressive strength improvement of 25.60% and 24.04% are respectively obtained. These improvements of mechanical properties may be originated from the structure uniformity and compactness as the SEM characterization indicated.
