Architecture/Non-Architecture/Non-non-Architecture:Talking About LIN Whei-Yin Again and an Opinion on the Posthumous Degree-granting at the University of Pennsylvania
The fact that the University of Pennsylvania posthumously awarded LIN Whei-Yin an architecture de-gree is worthy of discussion. This article presents three analytical hypotheses:architecture,non-architecture,and non-non-architecture.It reviews LIN Whei-Yin's architectural view and discusses how she,who was unable to enter the Department of Architecture then, helped us understand what architecture is from different standpoints. After returning to China,LIN's architectural path of arts and crafts can better reflect the transcendent realm of a humanist who treats architecture as the mother of the fine arts.Even though this degree will help future genera-tions regard LIN as an architect who can withstand institutional examination, her multiple identities as an artist-ar-chitect,a Renaissance person, and a craftsman-maker/builder make her the archetypal Chinese literati architect.
