Architectural Communication and English Neoclassical Practice:The Case of Sir John Soane
English neoclassical architecture,building upon its Baroque heritage,embraced the cross-Channel tra-ditions of tourism and surveying.However,it took these practices a step further by incorporating activities such as the systematic measurement of ruins,the collection of antiquities,the formation of organizations,and the estab-lishment of academies.This article focuses on the English architect John Soane,examining his experiences during the Grand Tour,his involvement in the Architects'Club,and his role as a professor of architecture at the Royal Academy(RA).Through this lens,the article seeks to uncover the dynamics of communication and development within English neoclassical architecture,exploring how a single architect's personal,social,and pedagogical rela-tionships influenced the field.
