Defining"Microscale-Lilong Houses":A Morphological Analysis of the Residential Neighborhoods in Shanghai Old Town in the Early 20th Century
Based on a field investigation in the Jinjiafang area of Shanghai old town,this study defines a new type of lilong houses named"microscale-lilong houses"using the Conzenian approach of town-plan analysis.The study investigates the spatial characteristics of this housing type in terms of plot pattern,land use,and the identity of the landowners,as well as the social,economic,and cultural forces that shaped the form.The study advances knowledge of the residential types and spatial diversity of lilong houses,establishing the groundwork for the eval-uation and preservation of early 20th-century urban heritage.
