Subject,Value and Purpose:an Analysis of the Ethical Basis of Gender Equality——Taking Plato,Aristotle and Immanuel Kant as Examples
Gender attribute is one of the many attributes that people have, however, the inequality caused by this attribute persists in human society. In the Western traditional ethics, there are some theoretical resources which are beneficial to the demonstration of gender equality, but some philosophers'gender concept is in contradiction with their equality thoughts.Plato gave women equal subject status in virtue, professional endowments, and legislation, while Aristotle distinguished the biological differences between men and women from the perspective of natural teleology, but the value argument that women should be subordinate to men is untenable, and Immanuel Kant's idea that everyone is an end provides an ethical basis for arguing for gender equality, but his view of gender is rife with prejudices against women.Gender inequality does not only come from natural physiological differences, but also from the long-term inequality of human society. The inequality created by nature should be reduced with the increase of human civilization,so that each person can develop freely in his or her own right and ultimately achieve the common prosperity of mankind.
