Adaptation and Balance:Nature Strategy in Architectural Culture of Ethnic Villages in Wuling Mountains:Based on the Field Investigation of Xing'an Village in Laifeng County
Adaptation and balance are two distinct nature strategies that have been identified through long-term ecological practices. These strategies mutually influence and connect with each other, shaping people's production and lifestyle through internal spiritual motivations.Initially, adaptation represents a negative attitude towards perceiving the natural environment during early human historical evolution;it is adaptable but passive. On the other hand, balance signifies a positive feedback attitude used to transform the natural environment after human society enters industrial civilization;it is creative and proactive. As a multi-ethnic settlement, the ancestors of Wuling Mountains have inherited this bidirectional ecological concept since ancient times and applied it to their architectural culture within ethnic villages. This concept is manifested through macro site selection, micro construction techniques,as well as site ceremonies conducted within these villages.Such local ecological knowledge can assist us in addressing environmental issues within our society with a more balanced approach. It holds significant practical implications for exploring the relationship between humans and nature during Chinese-style modernization.
