Based on the etymological analysis and historical review of architectural theory and its current challenges,the paper outlines the new themes,methods and characteristics in constructing a system of architectural theories in contemporary China.Based on the review of the global development of architectural theory since the 1960s,the paper maintains that architectural theories need to cope with the challenges of the built environment,culture,emerging technologies and the climate change.Based on the analysis of the development of contemporary Chinese architectural theories,it points out its lack of continuity,originality and systematicity,and offers a new agenda for the construction of future architectural theory system.
