An Exploration of the Analytical Approach to the Study of the Beaux-Arts Composition of T.P.YangA Case Study of the Schematic Design of Guesthouse of the Nationalist Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1930
T.P.Yang received rigorous Beaux-Arts design training at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1920s and designed plenty of excellent Beaux-Arts architectural works during his career. However, the core method of Beaux-Arts theory-composition-was rarely mentioned by Yang on the one hand, and there is little research in the academic community on the other.Based on the Beaux-Arts theory on composition, this paper proposes a tripartite method of formal analysis, which includes building elements, elements of composition and the manipulation of composition. It uses the design of the Guesthouse of the Nationalist Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a case study to demonstrate the operation with an intention to provide a new perspective on the study of the architectural works of the pioneering generation Chinese architects represented by T.P.Yang.
