Semantic Evolution of the Term"Architectural Art"(1920s-1950s)
Taking semantics and pragmatics as the potential analytical frameworks for the history of architectural theory, this paper examines the evolution of the meaning of"architectural art"in China between the 1920s and 1950s.Building upon a review of traditional Chinese architectural notions,it proposes that the term"architectural art"is a unique semantic creation by modern Chinese architects.Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the concept of"a rchitectural art"underwent a complex transition from being specially emphasized to being critically scrutinized.By analyzing the semantics and translations of"architectural art"in different historical contexts, the paper aims to provide a critical interpretive framework for understanding the relationship between"architecture"and"art".
