An Analysis and Review of Emil Kaufmann's Theory of Autonomy in Architecture
This paper introduces, analyzes and reviews Emil Kaufmann's exploration of architectural autonomy.Firstly,it gives a brief summary of Kaufmann's elucidation of architectural autonomy, and then traces the intellectual sources of Kaufmann's theory of architectural autonomy back to the influence of Heinrich Wölfflin and Max Dvořák,pointing out Kaufmann's stance as"in-between".Finally,it clarifies that Kaufmann did not distinguish the two different types of freedom inherited by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and Immanuel Kant, and from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, respectively;instead he directly linked Ledoux's architecture with Kant's autonomy, resulting in the fundamental deficiency in his theory.
