The Evolution of Form:From Structural Typologies to Structural Design
Understanding the structural form from an evolutionary perspective is key to moving from passive selection of"structural typologies"to active"structural design".In contrast to the traditional"tree-like"cognitive system of structural typologies, this paper proposes the"evolutionary matrix"to establish a"networked"cognitive framework of the structural form, with"force reconstruction","geometric deformation"and"material substitution"as the three dimensions of the evolution of structural form, explaining the evolutionary relationship between different structural forms by analyzing the mechanisms of force, form and material. It provides a methodological system for architects to design structure and provides an effective way for the collaborative design ofspace and structure.
