The Use of Glass Windows and the New Explorations of Space in Suiyuan Garden in the Qianlong's Reign of Qing Dynasty
Suiyuan Garden was built by the famous literati Yuan Mei in Nanjing in the Qianlong's Reign of Qing dynasty.In the garden,Yuan installed a lot of colorful glass windows and mirrors at important places,which remarks the earliest example in the Jiangnan Gardens.By analyzing Yuan's essays and the images of Suiyuan Garden,this paper discovers that Yuan took advantage of the performance of the transparency,color,and reflection of glass to create the winding and multi-layered space.The plate glass brought new spatial experiences and visual concepts which inspired the unique design of Suiyuan Garden,and Yuan Mei,a literati of the Xingling School of Qing dynasty started new explorations of construction materials and space in the making of Jiangnan Gardens.
