Literary Gathering:Discovering and Inventing the Histories for Shenzhen's Nantou Ancient Town
This paper reviews the pioneering researches on the Nantou Ancient Town(NAT)conducted by Shenzhen and Hong Kong historians in the early 1980s,summarizes the historical evolution of the NAT from Ming dynasty to the 1990s,and finally focuses on the archaeological excavation outside the NAT's South Gate in 2001,examining the discovery of the"Historic Site of the Moat in Eastern Jin Dynasty"with its related controversies. It attempts to combine academic and social analysis, historical and historiographical investigations together to examine how Shenzhen's changing historical consciousness as the city develops has profoundly influenced the construction of historical discourse and heritage protection strategies for the NAT on the one hand, and how a group of historians used different research methods and made different academic judgements on the other.
