Examining 32 illustrations of a garden included in the 1984 edition of Chen Congzhou's Shuoyuan(On Chinese Gardens),this paper explores the existence of Chinese garden-making drawings.Describing the making processes of the drawings with historical information,it identifies them as the Bamboo Retreat,also known as Zhuyin Lu of an important official of the late Qing,Xu Yongyi.On this basis,through close reading and iconographical analysis of some of the images,it argues that the drawings of the Bamboo Retreat are indeed garden-making drawings to guide the design and construction process.
