Beyond the Beautiful:The Chinese Debates on"Architectural Art"since 1949
The paper reviews the Chinese debate on the position of"whether architecture is art"since 1949.Some believe that architecture is a kind of sculptural art,while others insist art simply decorates architecture design or offers criteria to gauge architecture.The dispute reveals the conceptual discrepancy in Chinese architecture regarding its unspecified nature:form-making,ideology or social communication.From the passive mirror images of historical and social trends,to a self-containing tenet for architectural creation,this profound turn has led to today's Chinese architectural art with profoundly different meanings.
