From the Fragrant Hill Hotel to the Suzhou MuseumRereading I.M.Pei's Transcultural Exploration on the Architectural Archetype
Starting with I.M.Pei's essential intention, this paper analyzes the formal and spatial logic of the Fragrant Hill Hotel and reassesses Pei's transcultural exploration on the architectural archetypes.Based on the synthetic judgement of field survey, literature review and architectural language comparison, this paper considers that in the design of the Fragrant Hill Hotel I.M.Pei tried to combine three kinds of architectural archetypes-traditional Suzhou gardens and dwellings, castles in UK,and European villas. And the comprehensive application of those archetypes could also be recognized in the projects of Miho Museum and Suzhou Museum.
