Graphic Formal Analysis as a Method of Design Research
Originated from the teaching of Texas Rangers, the purpose of graphic formal analysis was to let students to gain the knowledge of modern architecture classics through model-making and diagramming. The paper establishes a preliminary understanding of this research field through reviewing selected teaching programs and important literatures in the historic context, elaborating two theoretic issues:first, the method of graphic representation of space in relation to different theory of space, and second, the formation of checklist for systematic analysis based on the theory of modern architecture. The main characteristics of graphic formal analysis as a method of design research is articulated and its importance for discovering design knowledge is further emphasized.
