Adapting to the Trend and Innovating through TraditionAn Analysis of the Nanjing Science and Technology Exhibition Hall
The Nanjing Science and Technology Exhibition Hall is a representative work of urban architecture created by Zhong Xunzheng in the 1980s.Through the analysis of its design diagrams, this paper aims to explore Zhong Xunzheng's thoughts and strategies in the exploration of modernist architecture with Chinese characteristics during that period.Situated within a complex urban environment, the hall achieves harmonious coexistence with its surrounding areas by means of the design of texture, axes, height, density, scale,as well as streets and watercourses. It organizes the space in the form of courtyards and,by employing the techniques of virtual courtyards, real courtyards and landscape gardening, realizes the organic integration of architectural and urban spaces. Moreover,by adopting the frame structure system and appropriate technologies,it exploits the shaping potential of reinforced concrete and creates the facade texture, thus highlighting critical regionalism and providing inspiration for contemporary architectural practice.
