From Silence of Geometry to Speaking of TypeAldo Rossi's Architectural Thoughts and Manfredo Tafuri's"Misreading"
Taking"silence"as a clue, this paper analyzes Manfredo Tafuri's discussion of the works of Aldo Rossi in comparison with Rossi's thoughts, and expands to an interpretation of Rossi's original intention. It expounds thatTafuri considers Rossi's architectural type as silence of formal autonomy to estrange from the external environment.Following the characteristics of formal autonomy,it points out that Tafuri's critical silence focuses on independence while Rossi's architectural type focuses on self-discipline,and Tafuri's discussion rise from his own theoretical stance. Finally, returning to Rossi's text,it interprets the silence of his early thoughts as geometric forms that eliminate noisy expression, and the silence of his later thoughts as the root of the type.
