Spatial Distribution Characteristics of the Northwest Fortress System of the Northern Song Dynasty
This article discusses the historic north-west fortress system of the Northern Song dynasty(960-1127 CE)based on a comprehensive review of relevant historical and geographical informa-tion.It employs historical archive analysis,spa-tiotemporal profile analysis, and spatial quantita-tive analysis to examine the spatial distribution structure, operation mechanism, and temporal characteristics of the fortress system. The research findings suggest that the northwest fortress system of the Northern Song dynasty presents a mixed spatial structure that integrated a homogeneous military reinforcing network with a central radial military-farming settlement network. The research then analyses the historical and geographical in-fluencing factors contributing to the typical local characteristics in the spatial structure of the for-tress system, revealing the systematic character-istics and overall architectural heritage features of the military settlements in the northwest for-tress system of the Northern Song dynasty. This research provides a comparative perspective for large-scale military architectural heritage in an-cient China, deepens the overall value recognition, and provides guidance for the comprehensive con-servation of military architectural and settlement heritage in northwest China.
