Composition of the Ancient Sichuan Salt Route Landscape System and Its Relationship with the Ancient Salt Industrial Towns
As a unique heritage corridor of the salt culture,the Ancient Sichuan Salt Route(hereafter,the Route)is an important carrier of historical,eco-nomic and cultural events such as the development of the salt industry in eastern Sichuan,ancient trade activities,and population migration,witnessing the dialogues between humans and the natural environ-ment.This article provides a new perspective for understanding and protecting this unique heritage corridor by elucidating the geographical distribution of the Route's historical and cultural resources,ex-plaining the interrelationship between the resources and the landscape environment,and exploring its historical and cultural spatial system in depth.The distant rural areas along the Route are peppered with characteristic landmarks such as pavilions,plat-forms,temples,and pagodas.In the suburban and urban areas are the ancient salt industrial towns and salt transport hubs.Within the ancient towns,the townships'layout centred around the salt industry.The transport system of the Route has connected the distant rural areas,the suburbs,and the town-ships to build up a comprehensive'heritagescape'with visual corridors.The article examines the cur-rent situation of the ancient salt industrial towns regarding the landscape system of the Route,pro-viding a reference for the transmission,protection,and development of the ancient salt industrial towns and the characteristic landscape resources of the salt cultural heritage route.
