A Study of the Early Modern'Sino-Western Hybrid Style'Churches in Fujian Province from the Perspective of'Local Architectural Translation'
The early modern'Sino-Western hybrid style'churches in Fujian Province are the prod-ucts of the exchange and collision of Chinese and Western architectural cultures.Most of the ex-isting research equates the'Sino-Western hybrid style'with the Chinese style under the localisa-tion strategy of western Christian Church,while neglecting the localisation evolution based on traditional Chinese architecture.Adopting the theory of'architectural translatability',this article examines 19'Sino-Western hybrid style'churches to discuss the formal translation of this style in the early modern era(1840-1949).First,it traces the source and analyses the translation of early modern churches in Fujian Province,discovering two approaches including'Chinese-to-Western translation'based on traditional Chinese architec-ture and'Western-to-Chinese translation'based on Western-style churches.Second,it identifies four types of architectural translation and the transferrable principles.Finally,it interrogates the translation contradictions and the reasons behind.A detailed analysis of the Xiapi Catholic Church in Fu'an finds that the underlying cause of this contradiction is the difference in'grammar'behind the'vocabularies'of Chinese and Western architecture at the time.
