The vernacular dwellings in ancient villages listed as Protected Cultural Heritage Sites are subjected to realistic conflicts in balancing preservation and renovation as well as privacy and publicity.This article focuses on the Wenyu Hall project in Chengkan Village,Huangshan,Anhui Province,and begins by providing a concise over-view of the prospects that led to the project's in-itiation.It then analyses the challenges posed by the architectural heritage's multiple identities and explores the significance of'collage'as an expe-dient strategy of the project.The article further fo-cuses on two particular collage tactics used in the regeneration design,'embedding'and'combining'.It interprets the application and expression of these two tactics from three perspectives:the incorpo-ration of old materials,the collage of space,and the construction of place.Finally,the article dis-cusses the necessity of the expediency of various value inclinations in heritage regeneration projects.It highlights the significance of'embedding'and'combining'to address effectively the conflicts in balancing preservation and renovation as well as privacy and publicity in the regeneration of historic built environment.
