Exploring the Controlled Intervention Strategy for Preventive Conservation of Architectural Heritage:The Restoration of St.Jacob's Church in Leuven,Belgium
In the context of preventive conser-vation of architectural heritage,scientific and quantitative prediction and evaluation are highly recommended.Stepwise'controlled intervention'serves as an effective strategy in restoration.It requires dynamic verification of the heritage's re-sponse to the addition,reduction,and modification processes,based on experimental and monitored datasets.Belgium is one of the first countries that implemented preventive conservation practices of architectural heritage,with St.Jacob's Church(Sint-Jacobskerk)in Leuven as a typical case of the 20th century.This article reviews the three phases of restoration process for the church that took place in 1963-1971,2000,and 2018-2020 respectively.It introduces a controlled interven-tion strategy based on experiments and moni-toring,and provides insights into the management of architectural heritage throughout its entire life cycle.
