谐音式地名不仅是地理实体的标记符号，而且能引起人们的联想。《红楼梦》中有许多谐音式地名，暗含深意。对比霍译本和杨译本，可以发现：霍译本十分注重译文的可接受性，强调译文的文学和美学功能；而杨宪益更强调译文应尽量忠实于原文形象。
Abstract
Homophonic geographical names not only are symbols for geographical location, but also arouse peoples＇ imagination and association. Cao Xueqin uses quite a number of homophonic geographical names in A Dream of Red Mansions, which mostly embody the author＇s implications. Comparison of Hawkes＇ and Yangs＇ Eng- lish versions shows the difference： Hawkes emphasizes acceptability, literary and aesthetic value of his translation, while Yangs emphasizes faithfulness to source text in his translation.
