China faced a shortage of highly qualified general practitioners at the grassroots level and an uneven distribution of healthcare personnel between urban and rural areas. To address the issue, the country launched a program to train rural targeted admission medical students for hospitals or medical institutions in rural areas in 2010.They are a special minority among medical students. They are different from general university students at the psychological level, despite the similarities. This study aims to examine the psychological health status of rural targeted students and improve their psychological well-being.A questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews were conducted on rural targeted students at a medical school in Anhui Province to identify their psychological problems and explore the underlying factors.Based on positive psychology, solutions were proposed to cultivate positive psychological qualities in these students.
