The tea aphid,Toxoptera aurantii Boyer(Hemiptera:Aphididae),is one of the important pests on tea plants.Lucubrating the resistance mechanism of specific T.aurantia resistant resources is crucial significance for breeding resistant tea varieties. The Wangmo excellent purple bud tea germplasm'W016'by our research group in the early stage has strong resistance to T.aurantii.Here,to preliminarily explore the resistance characteristics of this germplasm to T.aurantii.,the feeding behavior of T.aurantii on'W0 16'and'Huangjinya'(susceptible cultivar)was measured using electrical penetration graph technology, and the main physical characteristics and nutritional component factors affecting the probing and feeding activities of T.aurantia were identified on leaves. The results showed that T.aurantii produced 9 EPG waveforms on two tea germplasms, including non-probing behavior(np),intercellular stylet pathway(A,B,C,and pd),derailed stylet mechanics(F),xylem sap ingestion(G),phloem salivation(El)and passive phloem ingestion(E2).During the process of probing and feeding, the sum time of np and total duration of C waves of T.aurantia on'W016'were significantly longer than that on'Huangjinya'.No significant differences were observed in the number of F and duration of F between the two tested germplasms. However, the duration of E2 of T.aurantii on'W0 16'was significantly shorter than on'Huangjinya'.Additionally, trichome density, lower epidermis thickness and palisade tissue thickness were the main physical barriers factors of'W016'resistant to T.aurantii feeding stress, and contents of caffeine and soluble sugar were the main nutritional factors. The results indicated that the feeding resistance of'W0 16'to T.aurantii was closely related to the physicochemical properties of its leaves.
