Morphological characteristics of internal reproductive system of Bactrocera minax
Chinese citrus fly,Bactrocera minax(Enderlein)(Diptera:Tephritidae),is an important pest of citrus crops. In this paper, the morphology and structure of internal reproductive system of B.minax was studied on observation of optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy and paraffin section. The results showed that the internal reproductive system of female B.minax mainly consisted of ovaries, lateral oviducts, median oviducts, spermathecae, accessory glands, anterior vagina(bursa copulatrix, ventral receptacle, and signum),and posterior vagina(vagina and ovipositor). The internal reproductive system of the male consists mainly of testis, ejaculatory pump, ejaculatory duct, male accessory gland, input ejaculatory duct, output ejaculatory duct, posterior accessory gland and aedeagus. The female had a cloaca, which was located slightly behind the anterior end of the ovipositor, while the male has no cloaca. The surface of the anterior vagina of the female was covered by two pairs of muscles, and bursa copulatrix, ventral receptacle, and signum in the interior were not easy to be observed.Ejaculatory pump was a pale yellow sphere, composed of the ejaculatory apodeme(the internal skeleton of the ejaculatory pump),muscle fibers(muscles),and ejaculatory pump sac.The morphology and structure or tissue of internal reproductive system of B.minax had evolved to adapt to the mating, egg laying and movement motion mechanism of the pseudo-ovipositor.This study will provide a theoretical basis for understanding the reproductive physiology, evolution and diversity of insect,as well as the insect behavioral mechanisms of oviposition, mating and metabolite excretion.
