Simulation study on the reduction of groundwater pollution at the source of a municipal solid waste landfill in Hunan by groundwater barrier wall
Most of the waste landfills in Hunan are valley-type municipal solid waste landfills.Due to the rela-tively singular pathways and replenishment conditions of groundwater seepage in valley-type municipal solid waste landfills, the method of"source reduction"for groundwater pollution control is selected for manage-ment.Taking a typical valley landfill in Hunan as the research subject, the study uses GMS software com-bined with the hydrogeological conditions of the landfill to establish a numerical model of groundwater flow and contaminant migration. The model simulates and compares the changes in the groundwater flow and con-taminant migration of the landfill before and after the construction of a groundwater barrier wall, and evalu-ates the effectiveness of the upstream groundwater barrier in"source reduction"pollution control for the landfill based on monitoring data. The results show that:The method of setting up an upstream seepage wall+drainage pipe for"source reduction"has a certain effect on the management of groundwater pollution in this type of landfill;after the construction of the groundwater barrier wall, there is a significant increase in the upstream groundwater level, with a noticeable blockage of groundwater, and a significant decrease in the downstream groundwater level, reducing the amount of water that needs to be treated from the polluted membrane below the landfill;the groundwater flow rate across the barrier wall decreases after the groundwa-ter barrier wall, reducing the amount of polluted water from the landfill that needs to be treated;the seepage pipe discharge volume has the same trend of change as the precipitation volume.Overall, when the seepage pipe discharge volume increases, the concentration of COD shows a decreasing trend.
